Confused.com - An Independent Review

Consumers looking for the best deals often resort to online comparison websites that allow them to compare quotes from a large number of companies. Confused.com is a leading comparison site specialising in home and car insurance, but also offering other insurance and service-related products.

Confused.com offers quotes from numerous car insurers, and claims that it saves many of their visitors money when compared against their previous renewal price.

Product range

The confused.com site divides its products into four sections:

?€’ Insurance ?€“ Car, home, life, van, motorbike, caravan, car depreciation, small business, pet, medical, breakdown and landlords insurance.
?€’ Utilities ?€“ Gas & electricity, commercial energy, broadband Internet, TV and phone service.
?€’ Money ?€“ Credit cards, savings & ISAs, annuities, loans, mortgages, prepaid cards, car leasing and unemployment insurance.
?€’ Travel ?€“ Travel insurance, holidays, hotels and car hire insurance.

Confused.com does not have a special deals page although incentives are mentioned here and there, i.e., a 22-month interest free special on credit cards offered on the homepage. The site also claims to have exclusive deals that are not available at competing websites.

Concise online form

In order to get quotes, users must fill out a form that the search engine uses to narrow down results. The form for home insurance quotes, for example, requires that you complete four pages of questions, which is actually less than what you find on many other comparison sites.

You can also save your information and retrieve quotes at a later date, but this requires that you open up an account with confused.com. The form pages secure your private information with industry-standard 128-bit secure socket layers (SSL) encryption, so you do not have to worry about your data falling into the wrong hands.

If you open an account, all the stored data is password-protected, however, any email sent to the site lacks protection, so you should be careful when communicating with the company.

A bit difficult to navigate

The homepage is somewhat crowded and not that easy to scan for information. The buttons to get new quotes and to retrieve stored ones are small and the text is a bit difficult to read against the button background colour.

However, the other pages on the site are much less busy and are easy to read. The home insurance page, for example, has the quote buttons at the top followed by a section breaking down the different types of home insurance cover: contents, flat, buildings, student home, landlords and holiday home cover.

Next, comes a selection of the insurance providers along with a customer testimonial. At the bottom of the page is a list of home insurance news articles and informational articles along with a sampling of the site's home insurance guides.

Confused.com offers many helpful guides, for example, you can find information on tenants insurance, flats insurance, home emergency cover and home insurance rebuild costs. Here are some examples of other useful guides offered:

?€’ ?€œHow to calculate your home contents?€
?€’ ?€œA guide to home insurance excess costs?€
?€’ ?€œSaving money with a burglar alarm?€
?€’ ?€œHow to claim on your home insurance policy?€
?€’ ?€œHow to change your home insurance policy?€

The site FAQ has an easy-to-use design and provides a complete listing of providers for each type of product available. In addition to a general information FAQ, there are specialized FAQs for home insurance, gas & electricity, credit cards, life insurance, travel insurance, motorbike insurance and van insurance.

Confused.com also provides a support forum where users can post questions to the company staff or to other customers. To contact the company directly, the site has an online email form, but no email or postal addresses or phone numbers.

Confused.com is not a broker and says that it is completely independent and impartial when it comes to its providers. Confused.com also gives back to the community with its contributions mentioned on the ?€œCharity Work?€ page linked to the ?€œAbout us?€ section. The company has worked with causes like the Ty Hafan hospice, Oxfam and The Prostate Cancer Charity.

An established site with plenty to offer

Confused.com is an old-timer when it comes to online comparison sites and the fact that is still flourishing says something positive about its service. The homepage is a bit busy, but the other pages on the site have a more streamlined design for fast and easy use.

The site has an excellent FAQ and offers a wide variety of recent articles and guides to help users that are shopping for insurance and other products. The guides cover a very broad range of topics and anything that they do not cover is open for discussion at the support forum where you can interact with staff and other site users.

A ppossible site if you need to conduct extensive research before making a final decision on a product purchase.
